What is your favorite thing about being a dance teacher at Brodhead Dance Academy? The dancers! I love watching each dancer grow from the beginning of the year to end and from year to year. I also love working with a fun and supportive group of dance teachers.
What age did you first start dancing? I started dancing when I was 5 and studied dance all the way through my college graduation. My first dance class was tap and for recital we were scarecrows, complete with real straw in our costume!
Where did you receive your training and/or what degrees/certificates do you have? My home studio is in Appleton, WI where I danced from age 5 through my high school graduation. I went on to the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay where I graduated with a Major in Communication and the Arts and a double minor in Dance and Spanish. My college dance studies included Musical Theatre, Jazz, Rhythm Tap, Modern, Ballet, Period Styles in Dance, Dance History, & Choreography. While in college, I passed my exams to become a member of Dance Masters of Wisconsin (DMW) and have been a member since 2002. I currently serve on the Board of Directors for DMW.
What words of advice do you have for our young dancers? You are smart and strong. Reach for your dreams and don’t let anyone tell you no. Find people to work with who appreciate what you have to offer. In the words of the great Jazz teacher Luigi, “Never stop moving.”
Tell me about you in a few sentences. My husband and I have been married for 11 years and live in Madison. We have a 2 year old daughter who loves to keep us busy. Outside of dance, I work as an IT Project Manager for Sentry Insurance. My favorite workout other than dance is Pilates (which is also good for dancers!).
